Some of us are trying to formulate better option for when Bridge closes for the summer, April 15th, than forcing everyone out into illegal extremely dangerous space in and around the city camping.
The idea being discussed by a few is an outdoor well-lighted space where folks verifyably working to better their lives can legally sleep from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. one strike and your out. Security being provided simply by a security video camera, slightly stepped up police patrol, and bright lighting. Possibly a porta john, locked during daytime hours.
The primary need is safe tenting night time only, taken down during the day. Only secondarily car.
No additional Services as they are already available in the community, and there is no intention to create something that would be a magnet for people accepting the lifestyle of homelessness. That is not to disparage anyone. But what is being contemplated is simply for those that as designated by pinon project, access health services, or a similar agency, that are actively engaged in trying to move on with their lives.
The total population of such individuals is expected to be under 10. The capacity of this safe sleeping area that a few of us are exploring, is 10 or less.
No, it it would not be safe. But it might be more safe than sleeping out in the bushes, behind stores, in scrub area south of town. And strictly during the 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. hours it would be legal. And outside of those hours, illegal. Subject to arrest and/or trespassing.
Wouldn't the community rather have folks sleeping away from the stores and houses and businesses?
Wouldn't the community rather have females more safe than sleeping out around town?
Wouldn't the community like to provide a tiny bit of safety for those working to help themselves?
Communities have created safe sleeping areas with some success, and some failure, they typically get shut down due to the budget associated with grandiose services that we already have in cortez.
So the following links are of limited value but not zero, because in all cases they far exceed what is being envisioned by a few of us for Cortez. In no particular order:
- San Diego safe tenting site
- Colorado safe parking initiative
- UU church safe parking
- First Universalist safe parking
- Outdoor safe spaces
- National Parking program list
- Colorado safe parking initiative
- San Diego safe tenting
- Sedona safe place to park
- Smart City safe parking
- Safe lots LifeBridge
- Safe outdoor spaces Santa Fe
- Phoenix Church shelter spaces
- Controlled encampments safe spaces
